March 2007 West North Central REGIONAL Meeting As of today we have not had one application in the Call for Presenters and the deadline is fast approaching. Please cut and paste the invitation below and send it out to all your agency partners in your state. The Planning Committee is doing a great job, but we need everyone's help to get the word out so that we can offer an excellent conference to all our regional members this fall. The call for presenters is on the national SWCS website. Please forward the invitation below to any qualified individuals in your state that can offer an abstract that addresses the impacts of increased bio-fuel production on the Midwest landscape. The call for presenters ends March 31st. Abstracts can be submitted using the web-based solicitation found on the SWCS website and linked below. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant who is our Program Committee chair. Impacts of Increased Bio-Fuel Production on the Midwest Landscape Soil and Water Conservation Society West North Central Regional Conference October 16-18 in Dubuque, Iowa A Call for Presenters for the October16-18 conference, “Impacts of Increased Bio-Fuel Production on the Midwest Landscape” has been released. With regional and national attention focused on the use of renewable bio-fuels, energy conservation and energy independence, the impact on the environment (specifically on soil and water quality and quantity) is a critical dimension of the dialog that has often been in the background. The desire for less reliance on fossil fuels and foreign sources of energy will have a dramatic impact on national soil and water resources. The goal of the conference is to elevate the debate beyond just technology creation and narrow economic development aspects to address soil conservation, water quality and human decisions about land management and how these intersect in the public debate surrounding bio-based fuels; and in particular, increases in grain based bio-fuel production. The conference will feature oral presentations and poster sessions to address these important issues. Consider presenting your research and educational programs to your peers at a conference that will attract agency personnel, researchers, educators, policy makers and others interested in reducing, managing, as well as evaluating the environmental impacts of bio-fuels development and the bio-fuel landscape. Abstracts are due March 31. For more information contact Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant, cvnghgrn@uiuc.edu Spring Leadership Conference - CHANGE THE DATE! Thanks to everyone who responded. The vote was unanimous. We will move our leadership workshop to the fall and hold it in conjunction with the Regional Conference. So, cancel your spring dates of April 16-17th and mark your calendars for the Regional Conference in October. Annual Conference Delegate Session The annual delegate session has been set for Sunday, July 22nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during the Society's Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida. Each Chapter should select and submit the name and e-mail address of their official delegate to myself and SueAnn Lynes by April 27th. sueann.lynes@swcs.org Please help make the House of Delegates session productive by providing a (relative) brief issue paper that you would like discussed during the session and or any draft resolutions. Only designated delegates can participate in the House of Delegates meeting. After April 27th, I will have to approve any substitutions or changes in the official delegate. So far I have one confirmed delegate from the West North Central Region. Membership Goals MEMBER SERVICES UPDATE Membership Goals: Goal Total by February 2007 = 5372 Actual member totals February 2007 = 5156 Total = -216 As you can see, we did not achieve our goals for this year. Loosing members is detrimental to the continuation of the Society. Going forward, I’d like to see our membership grow by 5% each year rather than decline by that much. Which means, our goal for 2007-2008 is 5,414! Start recruiting members now and keep talking to our current members. Each one of you is important to the Society. Thank you.
