Merit Award for 2003,
Farmland and Natural Areas Project, Rick Hanson, representative
The Merit Award is available annually to a SWCS member or non-member group,
agency, business, product, etc. for accomplishments or contributions to the
natural resource field. The Chapter would like to recognize the Farmland and
Natural Areas Project for partnership formed to accomplish perpetual
conservation easements on farmland and natural areas in Dakota
County.
In 1999 in response to citizen interest in protecting natural
areas, an inventory of natural areas and farmland was done to identify natural
areas for protection. Dakota County Board of Commissioners agreed in the summer
of 2002 to put it a referendum on the ballot asking voters to support selling
$20 million in bonds to protect natural areas in the County from development.
This is the first time voters in any county in Minnesota have
passed a referendum to preserve open spaces. No one in attendance accepted the
award, so it was mailed.
